The LePelley Theory Of Tissue Density's Relationship to Pain and Dysfunction:

Musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction increases in direct association with an elevation of tissue density.

There are many causes of high TD. I believe that the components of our extra-cellular fluids are attracted to the bio-polymeric nature of our more cartilaginous tissues. This attraction combines with a variety of dynamic factors including:

  • Heat
  • Compressive Force
  • Overuse
  • Injury
  • Hypo-hydration
  • Torsion
  • Shear Force
  • Tensile Force
  • Inertia
  • Chemical Environment

Any one or a combination of these factors may cause this lipid-rich extra-cellular liquid to thicken, gel, hypo-hydrate, become dense, and eventually form into a thickened mass. I believe eventual mineralization of this mass is what the bone-like nodules and overgrowth on arthritic joints are made of.
